Choosing the right energy plan for your rental is crucial when it comes to managing your monthly bills effectively. Energy usage and square footage

The size of your space significantly influences your energy consumption. Larger living spaces typically require more energy for heating, cooling and powering appliances, which can lead to higher energy bills. Smaller homes and apartments tend to be more energy efficient.

Electricity usage is typically measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), and the average usage can vary depending on the size of your space. Here’s a breakdown of the average electricity usage of common rental sizes:*

  • One-bedroom apartment (450–750 sq. ft.)
A one-bedroom apartment typically consumes less electricity than its larger counterparts. While factors such as appliance efficiency, the age of the building and insulation play a role, on average, you might see a monthly usage of 500-700 kWh per month.
  • Two-bedroom apartment or small rental home (750–1,200 sq. ft.)
If you’re renting a two-bedroom apartment or a small home, monthly electricity usage tends to be higher, averaging between 800–1,200 kWh. Summer heat and winter chill can play a role here, especially if both bedrooms are frequently occupied and require cooling and heating.
  • Large rental home (1,200+ sq. ft.)
Larger homes with ample space and a potentially higher number of occupants will see a further increase in electricity usage. It’s not uncommon for homes of 1,200 square feet or more to consume 1,200–2,000 kWh per month, particularly during the summer and winter when AC and heat are required to keep the entire space comfortable.

How to estimate your usage when selecting an electricity plan

Understanding your usage is the first step toward choosing the right plan. As a first step, consider both the size and square footage of your rental, along with your daily habits. Are you a homebody who uses electricity and appliances throughout the day, or do you spend most of your time away?

If you have them available, reviewing your past electricity bills can also be useful in revealing your usage patterns and helping you identify the right plan based on historical data. Once you have an idea of how much electricity you’ll be using each month, you can use our handy energy savings calculator to determine how much you can save with Direct Energy.
